There is a long history of ceramic art in almost all developed cultures,
and often ceramic objects are all the artistic evidence left from vanished cultures, like that of the Nok in Africa over 2,000 years ago.
The technique Van de Griend uses to make her sculpture is not a common one
in the field of ceramic art. She approaches the clay as a sculptor would approach his stone, from the outside inward. Her work is often referred to as a Modern Interpretation of the Old Masters.
